How to Share a Screenshot as a Link (and Keep It Private)

By Sleekshot Team 6 min read

Short answer

The fastest way is a screenshot app that uploads for you. In Sleekshot, press PrtSc, select the area and press Ctrl+U. A short link is ready to copy, and you don't need an account. If you want to control who sees the image, save it to OneDrive or Google Drive and use Share, then Copy link. With most services, anyone who has the link can open the screenshot, so blur private details first.

The quickest way to share a screenshot as a link on Windows is a screenshot app that uploads for you. In Sleekshot, press PrtSc, select the area and press Ctrl + U. A few seconds later, a short link shows up with Open and Copy buttons. You don't need an account. If you need to control who can see the image, save it to OneDrive or Google Drive and copy a share link there instead.

A link beats an attachment when you paste into a support ticket, a document or a busy chat. Nobody has to download anything, the image opens in any browser and the same link works in five places at once. The catch is privacy. Most screenshot links work like a house key: whoever has the key gets in. Below are your options, what each kind of link actually protects and a short checklist for before you hit send.

Method Steps after the screenshot Account Who can open the link Expiry or password Best for
Sleekshot Ctrl + U Not needed Anyone with the link (random code, hidden from search) No Chats, tickets, quick email replies
OneDrive Save → Share → Copy link Microsoft account Anyone, or only people you choose Yes, with Microsoft 365 Work files where you need to control access
Google Drive Upload → Share → General access Google account Anyone with the link, or specific people You can turn access off anytime Teams that work in Google Workspace
Lightshot (prnt.sc) Ctrl + D Not needed Public, according to Lightshot's privacy policy No Nothing personal or work-related
Imgur Upload in the browser Recommended Anyone with the link No Public images; blocked in the UK since 2025

Sleekshot is a free screenshot and screen recording app for Windows 10 and 11. You upload from the same screen where you take the screenshot and add arrows and text. There's no separate upload page and no sign-up.

  1. Press PrtSc, Sleekshot's default shortcut. The screen dims.
  2. Drag over an area, click a window or press Ctrl + A for the whole monitor.
  3. If you want, add an arrow (1), numbered steps (S) or blur a private detail (B) right on the screenshot.
  4. Press Ctrl + U or click Upload. A small window in the bottom-right corner shows the link.
  5. Click Copy and paste the link into Slack, Teams, Telegram, an email or a Jira ticket. Open shows you what the other person will see.

The other person opens a page on sleekshot.app with your screenshot and a download button. They don't need Sleekshot, an account or a plugin.

How private is it? Each link uses a random 12-character code, not a counter, so nobody can find it by trying nearby addresses. The pages are also hidden from search engines. But there's no password and no expiry date. And since there's no account, there's no gallery where you can manage old uploads. Treat every upload as something that could get forwarded. Blur or crop anything that shouldn't travel before you press Ctrl + U.

If you're worried about uploading by accident, hide the button in Settings → Upload → Cloud upload button. Copying (Ctrl + C) and saving (Ctrl + S) still work as usual. More on the share links page.

OneDrive comes with Windows and gives you the most control without installing anything. You need a Microsoft account.

  1. Save the screenshot to your OneDrive folder. Windows can do this on its own: here's how to save screenshots to OneDrive.
  2. In File Explorer, right-click the file and choose Share. Or open onedrive.com, select the file and click Share.
  3. Check the link settings before you copy it. By default, the link may allow editing. Switch it to view-only, and choose whether Anyone or only specific people can open it.
  4. Click Copy link and paste it wherever you need it.

With a Microsoft 365 subscription, you can also add an expiration date and a password to the link. Without one, an "Anyone" link works until you stop sharing or delete the file. To take back access, open the file's sharing settings and remove the link.

Google Drive works the same way and suits teams that already use Google Workspace.

  1. Go to drive.google.com and drag the screenshot into the window (or New → File upload).
  2. Right-click the file and choose Share.
  3. Under General access, keep Restricted to share only with people you add by email, or switch to Anyone with the link.
  4. Click Copy link.

You can switch the link back to Restricted at any time. The old link then stops working for everyone you didn't add by name.

Method 4: Image hosts and other screenshot apps

Several popular apps upload to their own image hosts. They're handy, but read the fine print.

  • Lightshot (prnt.sc). Press Ctrl + D after a screenshot to upload it. Lightshot's own privacy policy says every image uploaded to the site is public and anyone who types its URL can see it. For years, prnt.sc addresses were short and almost sequential, so strangers could find other people's screenshots by guessing. We cover the details and safer habits in Is Lightshot safe?
  • Imgur. Upload in the browser and you get a link in seconds. In 2023, Imgur deleted old, inactive images that weren't tied to an account, so sign in for anything you want to keep. Since September 30, 2025, Imgur is blocked for visitors in the UK, so links won't open there.
  • Gyazo. Uploads every screenshot on its own and gives you a link. On the free plan, only your 10 most recent screenshots stay in your history. See how it compares in our Gyazo alternative guide.
  • ShareX. Free and open source, and it can upload to dozens of services or your own server. It does a lot, but it takes some setup.

Most screenshot links are unlisted, not private. An unlisted link doesn't show up in search results or public galleries, but anyone who gets the URL can open it without logging in. That's how Sleekshot, Imgur and prnt.sc links work. The difference is how hard a link is to guess. Nobody stumbles on a long random code (Sleekshot). Short sequential codes (older prnt.sc links) can be found by trying the ones next to them.

A restricted link is different. OneDrive's "specific people" and Google Drive's Restricted access check who's signed in before they show the file. Use that for anything confidential, like HR documents, contracts or customer data.

Also think about what happens after you share. Links get forwarded, and chat apps show previews to everyone in the channel. Once someone downloads the image, deleting the link won't bring it back.

  • Crop to what matters. A tight selection leaves out the browser tabs, bookmarks and notifications around it.
  • Blur personal info. Emails, names, order numbers, API keys and session tokens. Here's how to blur a screenshot on Windows.
  • Check the edges. Taskbar previews, a chat pop-up or a second document often sneak into full-screen screenshots.
  • Pick the right kind of link. Unlisted for everyday sharing, restricted (OneDrive or Google Drive) for anything confidential.
  • Don't post the link publicly by mistake. A link pasted into a public forum or a public Slack channel is as good as public.

Which option should you use?

For everyday sharing in chats and tickets, one key to upload is hard to beat. Sleekshot gives you a link without an account, and its random links can't be guessed. For confidential images, use OneDrive or Google Drive with a restricted link. Avoid prnt.sc for anything you wouldn't pin to a public noticeboard.

Frequently asked questions

How do I turn a screenshot into a link?
Use a screenshot app that can upload, like Sleekshot: press PrtSc, select the area and press Ctrl+U to get a short link. Without extra software, save the screenshot to your OneDrive folder, right-click it and copy a share link. Or upload it to Google Drive and choose Share.
Can I share a screenshot link without creating an account?
Yes. Sleekshot uploads without sign-up, and so does Lightshot. But Lightshot's own privacy policy says every image uploaded to prnt.sc is public. OneDrive and Google Drive need a Microsoft or Google account, and that's what lets you control who can open the link.
Who can see a screenshot I share as a link?
With unlisted links (Sleekshot, prnt.sc, Imgur), anyone who has the link. Sleekshot links use a random 12-character code and are hidden from search engines, but they have no password. OneDrive and Google Drive can limit access to specific people who have to sign in.
Can a screenshot link expire or have a password?
OneDrive can add an expiration date and a password to a share link if you have a Microsoft 365 subscription. In Google Drive, you can switch a link back to Restricted at any time. Sleekshot links have no expiry date or password, so don't upload anything you wouldn't want forwarded.
Is it better to send a screenshot as a file or as a link?
A link is better for tickets, documents, email threads and anyone on a slow connection. The image opens in a browser, and you can paste the link in several places. Send a file when the content is confidential and you trust the channel, or when the person needs to keep the original.
